5 destinations you don’t know from Cusco

When you think of Cusco, the first thing to that comes to mind is Machu Picchu, reasonable as it is the main tourist spot known in Peru, besides being one of the 7 New Wonders of the World. However, the land of the Incas has other destinations that are worth visiting but are not so popular.

So, if you have plans to travel to Cusco, we list 5 destinations you should not miss when visiting the land of the Incas.

1.  Maras

Maras is a town located on the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where an ancient custom is still practiced: the use of pre-Inca salt pools. This is why nowadays these impressive embedded ponds of salt located in Maras have become a tourist attraction of Cusco, it covers the Qoripujio mountain side like a layer of snow, but it’s actually covered with the salt of Maras.

There, each one of the more than 3 thousand salt ponds have different tones of white or pink, that has already been recommended as a healthy option for daily food due to the healing properties it has. Besides its nutritional facts, Maras captivates for the wonderful landscape it offers.

 

2.  7 Colors Mountain

Vinicunca mountain, now known as the 7 Colors Mountain, offers an incredible landscape as it shows the 7 color of the rainbow and you can visit any time of the year. This place is located over 5,000 meter above sea level and you will have to take a 3-hour walk from Japura town (Japura is located almost a 3-hour trip in bus from Cusco) in the Vilcanota mountain range.

The truth is that the effort will be worth, because once you get there, you will be seduced by this beautiful mountain of 7 colors and which colorful contrast between golden, turquoise and fuchsia stripes is due to the oxidation of the high level concentration of metals that the mountain contains.

3.      Moray

Moray is an archaeological site located 7 kilometers from Maras in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It has been studied that it was used by the Incas as an agricultural research center that allowed them to make different experiments with plants and seeds in different microclimates in order to have the best annual harvest of a specific product.

Here you will get impressed by its platforms (andenes) where each one has a different temperature, reason why they were able to grow several kinds of products. That is why in Moray, Incas grew over 250 different kind of vegetables, and complex hydraulic systems were designed and built for watering the place..

 

4.  Chincheros Archaeological Park

Chinchero is a destination not commonly known in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, but its historical importance makes it into one of the most important precincts in Cusco. It is located 3,762 meters above sea level in the Chinchero district, in Urubamba province, and history says that its construction is from 1480 during Inca Tupac Yupanqui government.

Nowadays we know that it was an important agricultural site of 43 hectares built during the Inca time and that stands out for its stairs, walls, and beautiful platforms (andenes) where they used to till the land with different agricultural products.

5.  Pongo de Mainique

For the lovers of nature and adventure nothing better than visiting Pongo de Mainique, an impressive canyon located north of Cusco and where the Urubamba river crosses. This place is the entrance to the National Sanctuary of Megantoni and the welcome to the jungle.

In Pongo de Mainique, a place that will get you to the exuberant Amazonian plain, you will delight yourself with the waters of Urubamba river, and you will appreciate the beauty that amazes the visitor with many waterfalls, highlighting the Tonkini waterfall, the largest and the most majestic.

One of the activities you can do is rafting and sailing on boats all along the 2 kilometers, surrounded by cliffs and exuberant vegetation. It is recommendable to travel to this place between May and October, during this period there is lower risk of rain, reason why the river is in the best time for sailing.
